Our director Clare was invited by Deputy Editor Aby Kay to comment on some interesting results they had received as part of the Level The Field Survey.
The survey identified that there had been a significant change in the feelings of equality when it came to how women felt about succession since the same question was asked in 2024. There was a drop from 69% to just 36% in the ten years between the research initiative.
As a farmer's daughter who didn't go into farming, Clare had a theory...in the early 90's when she was growing up on the farm there were real physical barriers to becoming a farmer, especially on an arable fenland farm where 20 tonnes of potatoes were manually bagged several times a week and seed and fertiliser sacks were too heavy to lift let alone get into the drills and spreaders.
Automation has changed that and now the physical barriers are removed, we are experiencing a higher perceived gender barrier in terms of attitude which is less easily overcome that it seems was hiding behind it all along.
